reVisiting took shape on the theme “Tell me a landscape!” and during creation residencies in different geographical locations in Québec. The project therefore brings together a variety of portraits and stories relative to specific places, and in the form of a great cumulative collective memory amasses photographs (portraits and landscapes) along with encounters and stories.
“Combining different references to portraits with the traditional esthetic of the landscape, reVisiting questions the notion of déjà vu and repositions the individual in his or her memories to merge the different picture-taking times and in so doing create both optical and temporal illusions. With an esthetic close to the studio picture and its illustrated backgrounds, and the esthetic also of the tourist amateur (head slightly out of frame, landscape half revealed / largely hidden by the subject), I want to maximize the narrative potential of the scene, the place and the individual to move towards a series of independent ‘pictorial tableaux’ that draw on the ‘off-camera’ to evoke what underlies the scene: introspective micro-spaces tinged with memories of those the place evokes for the subject and/or the viewer…
An invitation goes out to the population to attend a gallery “studio” shoot, where they can point out a place they hold dear on a map of the region and provide the reasons for their choice. When that first stage is over I go off to photograph the places, guided and inspired by those instructions, something like what happens in a rally. These landscapes, which can be urban, natural, personal or public, are then added to the portraits as a background.

Ce projet se voulant être une collection de portraits, de photographies de voyage, d’un grand album de photo –d’inconnues- tous les participants font partie de la sélection finale. Pendant l’exposition de la région concernée, les photos des participants sont exposées sur les murs et les portraits précédents sont réunis sous forme d’un grand livre à consulter ( aux mêmes dimensions que les images aux murs).
Pour l’expérience en galerie, je préconise un accrochage sous la forme de regroupement linéaire continu (jusqu’à quatre rangées de haut), de façon à ce que les regards des sujets se succèdent, se croisent et s’entrecroisent pour ainsi proposer différents liens entre les images, entre les murs. Les images peuvent être perçues comme un espace de réflexion introspectif qui tente de sortir du cadre pour converger vers le regardeur.
